Seyðisfjörður 2008 - Photos
July 15, 2008
July 2008 I stayed in a house in Seyðisfjörður, east fjords of Iceland. The house belonged to a friend of mine the artist Birgir Andésson that died the year before. I traveled into to the highland, a wilderness where Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant was in construction. I noticed the great canyon, Hafrahvammagljúfur, where the bellowing glacier river, Jökulsá á Dal, used to stream was nearly empty. It was sad to see a unique natural phenomenon had lost its own power. The Dam is 193 meters tall with length of 730 meters and the largest its type in Europe. The project has been heavily criticized for its environmental impact and its use of foreign workers. The Plant was open 2009.
